Family of Robert Joseph Schmidt

Dr. Robert Joseph Schmidt was born August 7th, 1937 at Mercy Hospital, New
Orleans, Louisiana.
In 1945 Robert's parents moved them from Convent, Louisiana, to Biloxi, Mississippi, where his father continued his medical practice above the
old Kimble & Quint's drug store.
That same year Robert entered Sacred Heart Academy in the second
grade. In 1948 he entered Notre Dame Junior High School, and 1951 entered
Notre Dame High School. There he participated in the Band and in
scholastic activities. He graduated as valedictorian in 1955. He
then attended the University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Indiana for three
years and transferred to Tulane University of School of Medicine where he
graduated in 1962.

Baxter to Dr. Robert J. Schmidt
Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Baxter of Zachary announce the engagement of
their daughter, Gladys Beeson, to Dr. Robert Joseph Schmidt, also of
Biloxi, Miss., son of Dr. and Mrs. Harry J. Schmidt, also of Biloxi.
The ceremony will take place October 2 at 5 o'clock in the afternoon
at St. John Catholic Church in Zachary.
Miss Baxter is a graduate of Zachary High and received her B.S.
degree from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches. She also
received a degree from the Charity Hospital School of Anesthesia and
attended LSU. Dr. Schmidt is a graduate of Notre Dame High and, after attending the
University of Notre Dame, received his degree from the Tulane University
School of Medicine. He is interning at the Charity Hospital at
present. He is a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity.

Miss Gladys Beeson
Baxter, Dr. Robert Joseph Schmidt are United in Marriage
St.
John's Catholic Church in Zachary was the scene of Miss Gladys Beeson
Baxter's marriage to Dr. Robert Joseph Schmidt of Biloxi, Miss., which
was celebrated at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. John A. Weber.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Baxter of Zachary and
the bridegroom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson Schmidt of
Biloxi.
The church was beautifully
decorated with white gladioli and asters. Mrs. Guy McHugh was organist,
playing "March Romane" by Gounod and "Processional"
by Dooner, in addition to other traditional wedding music.
The
bride was given in marriage by her brother, Mr. Henry B. Baxter, Jr.,
and wore a gown of ivory peau de soie made on princess lines. This was
worn with a jacket of lace outlined at the neck and at the wrist, where
the long sleeves were pointed, with designs of seed pearls.
The
jacket join4ed the gown at the front with a peau de soi bow. Appliques
of lace and seed pearls embellished the skirt and the fingertip veil of
illusion was arranged from a tiara of pearls. She carrie4d a bouquet of
white rosebuds and a white orchid.
The
bride had as matron of honor her sister, Mrs. Henry Rhodus, and as maid
of honor Miss Beryl Smith. Bridesmaids were the bride's sister, Mrs.
Robert M. Hammatt, and Mrs. Loudon Yantis.
They
wore frocks of emerald green velveteen made with short full skirts and
elbow length sleeves. Their headpieces were of matching velveteen and
tulle. Each carried a large white chrysanthemum with gold center.
The
bridegroom had as best man his father and the groomsmen were Dr. Harry
Johson Schmidt, Jr., Mr. Richard Schmidt, and Mr. Henry Eikle. The
ushers were the bride's brother, Mr. Kird Baxter, Mr. Robert Hammatt and
Mr. George Byron Booth of Biloxi.
Reception
at Home
A reception was held at
the bride's home in Zachary. Members of the house party were Mrs. T.N.
Samuel, Mrs. Eunice Wicker, Mrs. Jesse Devall, Mrs. Lucille Lakey, Mrs.
E.J. McCants of Gulfport, Miss., Miss Raney Hammatt, Miss Meryl Annison
and Miss Joy Smith.
The bride's
mother wore a gown of mink colored taffeta with brown accessories and an
orchid corsage. The bridegroom's mother wore a honey beige dress with
matching accessories and an orchid.
Following
a wedding trip the couple will be at home in New Orleans where Dr.
Schmidt is interning at Charity Hospital. He graduated from Notre Dame High
School, attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated from the Tulane
University School of Medicine. He is a member of Phi Chi Medical
fraternity.
The bride is a graduate

brown accessories and wore the orchid from her bouquet. Out
of town guests included: Mr. Richard Schmidt, Miss Margaret Balter, Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Kennedy of Biloxi; Mrs. Lucille Lake and Mrs. E.J.
McCants of Gulfport, Dr and Mrs. Harry Jonson Schmidt, Jr., Mr. and Mrs.
George Martin, Jr., Mrs. Maurice Meath, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wooton and
Miss Grace Bushey of New Orleans.

On June 30, 1963 they had their first child, Robert Jr.
Robert did his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. On
March 6, 1965 they had their second child Margaret Baxter Schmidt.
Robert served the US Navy at Bremerton, Washington, as Lieutenant Commander
from 1966 through 1968. Following his service with the Navy the family
moved to Biloxi, where they purchased the Denaig house on the Beach in
Biloxi.
In 1969 Robert, Jr. was enrolled at Nativity BVM Elementary
school, and Margaret soon followed. Also in 1969 Hurricane Camille
destroyed the family's home on the beach. Robert, Jr and Margaret were
sent to Zachary, Louisiana, to attend school for a few months.
Robert
built a "hurricane proof" home on the same property and moved into it
in 1971. It has since survived 3 direct hits of hurricanes, FREDERICK
(1979), ELAINA (1985) & GEORGES (1998).
***Hurricane Katrina destroyed the home in
August, 2005***

In 1973 Dr. Schmidt bought the family a sailboat,
"ODIN", which they cruised throughout Mississippi, Alabama and
Florida. In 1975 they cruised to the Bahamian Islands for three weeks
during the summer.
In 1975 Dr. Schmidt served as Commodore of the Biloxi Yacht
Club, which he assisted in re-writing the club's constitution. In 1985 he
served on the Advisory Board for the Jefferson Bank and elected to server President of the Combined Medical-Dental Staff Biloxi Regional.
He also served on the Advisory Board for the Maritime & Seafood Industry
Museum.
In 1985 Dr. Schmidt's daughter Margaret Baxter Schmidt, served
as maid to Queen Ixolib in the Gulf Coast Carnival Association's annual Mardi
Gras Ball. In 1997 Dr. Schmidt served as King of Les Masquees Mardi Gras
Krewe. In 2000 his son served as Commodore of the Biloxi Yacht Club, and
now serves on the Advisory board for the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum.
After a long bout with Cancer Dr. Schmidt died at 4:15pm on
April 5, 2000, at his residence at 534 Beach Boulevard, Biloxi, Mississippi.

BILOXI - Dr. Robert J. Schmidt, 62, died Wednesday, April 5,
2000, in Biloxi.
Dr. Schmidt was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and had been a
lifelong resident of the Coast. He had been a doctor since 1962 and had
practiced medicine in Biloxi since 1968.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Harry J.
Schmidt Sr.
He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Beeson Baxter of
Zachary, Louisiana, and son, Robert J. Schmidt Jr. of Biloxi, and
daughter, Margaret Schmidt Davis of Lafayette, Louisiana; four
grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. Richard C. Schmidt and Dr. Harry J.
Schmidt Jr.
Dr. Schmidt served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant

Dr. Schmidt was past Chief of Staff of Biloxi Regional Medical
Center, past President of the Medical and Dental Staff of Biloxi
Regional Medical Center. He graduated from Notre Dame High School,

Indiana, and graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine, New
Orleans, Louisiana. He was a member of the American Medical Association,
Mississippi Medical Association, Coast Counties Medical Society,
Southern Medical Association, Conrad Collins OB/GYN Society and
the American Society of Addictive Medicine and was helpful in
establishing the Bienville Recovery Center.
Dr. Schmidt lived in Biloxi for 55 years and was a member of the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral. He was a longtime member
of the Biloxi Yacht Club of which he was Past Commodore and past member
of the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Biloxi Bay
Chamber of Commerce, served on the Maritime & Seafood Museum's
Advisory Board and also belonged to the Order of Mithras Carnival
Association.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2000, Mass of the
resurrection of Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral at 1 p.m. Internment in
Evergreen Cemetery, Ocean Springs, MS. Friends may call from 12 until 1
p.m. Saturday at the Cathedral. Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe
Funeral Homes in Biloxi is in charge of arrangements.

Longtime Coast doctor dies at 62

BILOXI - Long-time physician and community leader Dr. Robert
J. Schmidt, 62, died Wednesday from cancer.
He had been a physician since 1962 and had practiced medicine in
Biloxi since 1968.
"He was dedicated to his patients and his family and was a
devoted father and husband," said his brother, Dr. Richard Schmidt.
His son, Robby Schmidt, said, "He was a very compassionate
person, always willing to help someone in trouble."
Schmidt practiced as an obstetrician/gynecologist at the Schmidt
Clinic on Lameuse Street with brothers Richard and Dr. Harry Schmidt Jr.
Schmidt served on several local medical boards. He was past chief of
staff of Biloxi Regional Medical Center and past president of the
Medical and Dental Staff of Biloxi Regional Medical Center. He was also
a member of the American Medical Association, Mississippi Medical
Association, Coast Counties Medical Society, Southern Medical
Association, Conrad Collins OB/GYN Society and the American Society of
Addictive Medicine and was helpful in establishing the Bienville
Recovery Center.
He was a resident of Biloxi for 55 years and was a member of
Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was a longtime
member of the Biloxi Yacht Club, where he was past commodore and a past
member of the board of directors. He was also a member of the Biloxi Bay
Chamber of Commerce, served on the Maritime & Seafood Industry
Museum's advisory board and belonged to the Order of Mithras Carnival
Association.
"He loved working with wood - working with his hands," said
Robby. "That's probably why he was a doctor. He liked helping
people."
